Utilities United Against Scams scam prevention safety

From phony calls threatening to shut off power to bogus emails and even imposters pretending to be employees, scammers posing as Eversource representatives are becoming increasingly more sophisticated. Every day, electric, water, and natural gas customers throughout the country are being targeted by impostor utility scams. While their deceitful tactics may vary, including having multiple callers on the line impersonating representatives from more than one company as part of the scam, the goal is always the same – to steal money and personal information from unsuspecting people. In recognition of Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS) Day on November 19th, Eversource is joining utilities across the country in reminding customers to be vigilant and recognize the signs of suspicious behavior, especially with the busy holiday season approaching. The biggest red flag to be aware of is being asked to pay with a gift card, prepaid debit card or Bitcoin – Eversource will never contact a customer with these types of requests.

Ghosts, skeletons, and goblins will soon freely walk neighborhood streets asking for sweet treats, and Eversource is alerting customers they may have already inadvertently invited vampires into their homes and businesses. Vampire power, also known as phantom load, ghost energy or standby power, is electricity that is consumed by some appliances and electronics even when they’re turned off. With the potential for the first heat wave of the year in the forecast, bringing temperatures well into the 90s and high humidity later this weekend and into next week, air conditioners and fans will be working overtime at many homes and businesses. During the summer months, Eversource customers in Massachusetts use about 30% more electricity to keep cool when the mercury soars, and that increase can be even greater when the state experiences multiple heat waves like it did last year. While high electricity usage during a heat wave can put a strain on the electric system, the energy company is prepared to meet the increased demand and its crews are ready to respond to any outages or issues that may arise. Eversource system operators are constantly monitoring the system and are ready to reroute power and shift other resources as necessary.

As the ocean waters churn along the east coast and another hurricane season begins, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting above-normal activity for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Between June 1 and November 30, NOAA is forecasting a 60% chance of an above-normal season with 6–10 hurricanes having winds of 74 mph or higher and 3–5 major hurricanes with winds 111 mph or higher.
