emergency response Water Service Aquarion

Following emergency declaration by Governor, Aquarion Water Company coordinating with state and local officials to aid local water customers

BOXFORD, Mass. (September 12, 2025) – In response to a water emergency affecting the Andrews Farm neighborhood in Boxford, Massachusetts, Eversource subsidiary Aquarion Water Company of Massachusetts has been directed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) to assume operational and management control of the local water system. This action follows a declaration issued by Governor Maura Healey on September 10, 2025, citing the urgent need to restore potable water service to 53 homes rendered uninhabitable due to lack of water.

Under the leadership and expertise of Eversource Energy, Aquarion is working in coordination with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, the Towns of Boxford and Topsfield, and other local partners. Aquarion is authorized to access all necessary equipment and assets of Andrews Farm Water Company and its close integration with Eversource’s infrastructure and operational leadership will help enable the seamless deployment of resources to lead this critical effort. As of Thursday afternoon, water service has been restored to customers, but the system remains under a Boil Water Order until further notice. Moving forward, Aquarion will be taking steps to ensure the delivery of dependable water service to the neighborhood.

“We never like seeing our neighbors in need facing an emergency like this, but we’re always ready to serve Massachusetts and answer the call to support our state and communities when catastrophe strikes,” said Eversource Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer Joe Nolan. “Aquarion has a longstanding track record of industry-leading reliability and operational success and will work as expeditiously as possible to ensure the dependable delivery of this essential service to the Andrews Farm neighborhood. We take great pride as a trusted partner with the commonwealth and in our commitment to superior customer service. We’ve done this before and always stand ready to serve our neighbors, communities and state whenever our support is needed.”

Eversource and Aquarion bring a strong track record of operational excellence in emergency utility support. Among other successful response efforts, Eversource was brought in by then-Governor Charlie Baker to lead the emergency response following the Merrimack Valley gas tragedy in 2018, and in 2011, Connecticut regulators selected Aquarion’s plan to resolve uranium and radon contamination in the Greenridge water system in Brookfield, Connecticut.

“Access to safe drinking water is fundamental to the health and well-being of people and communities, an essential need that we work to provide every day with an unyielding commitment to professionalism and operational excellence” said President of Aquarion Water Company Lucy A. Teixeira. “We’re ready to bring our decades of experience in complex water system operations, rapid response capabilities and commitment to customer service to quickly respond and support Andrews Farm residents and the Town of Boxford.”

Eversource and Aquarion remain committed to ensuring the health and safety of the Andrews Farm community and will continue to work closely with state and local officials throughout this process to ensure the delivery of dependable, quality water service.
