Main Streets energy efficiency small business

As part of its ongoing commitment to help customers across its service territory take control of their own energy use with optimized solutions, Eversource is bringing its premier small business energy efficiency initiative, Main Streets, to Connecticut once again this year. Through Main Streets, the energy company has partnered with eight municipalities – Hartford, Montville, New London, Torrington, Manchester, Stamford, Newtown and New Milford – to connect small business owners with approved contractors who offer energy assessments to discuss upgrades that lower energy use and reduce costs.

Stringing electric lines is part of the job for Eversource lineworkers, but today they’re using their bucket trucks and skills for a different kind of project – stringing ropes for a challenge course at a summer camp in Ashford. Several lineworkers along with more than a dozen other Eversource employees are volunteering at the June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation Camp as part of Scouting America’s Day of Caring. The volunteers are helping to prepare and improve the camp before the 2025 summer season – working on landscaping, tree trimming, electrical work, and much-needed trail maintenance, in addition to installing the new ropes course.

Energy supply Rates energy efficiency

As warmer weather arrives in Connecticut and customers start cranking up the air conditioner to beat the heat, a new lower Standard Service supply rate was filed today with Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) that would go into effect July 1. The new Standard Service rate for residential customers receiving energy supply through Eversource would change from the current 11.19 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 9.75 cents per kWh starting July 1. For the typical residential customer using 700 kWh per month, that’s a decrease of approximately $10, or 5%, on their total bill.

Considering that most of a customer’s bill is based on usage, energy efficiency measures can lead to significant savings, and the energy company is encouraging customers to explore the many solutions and incentive programs available. On average, customers use about 35% more electricity during the summer months, with last year’s record-breaking heat causing usage to rise from June to July by 45%. Even if individual components of rates decrease, the increase in summer usage can still lead to higher bills for customers.

As winter approaches, Eversource is reminding customers they can take control of their energy costs by shopping for a third-party supplier before an expected supply rate increase that typically occurs at the beginning of each year. Roughly half of New England’s electricity is produced using natural gas, and seasonal demand for the fuel drives up the price power generators charge. Under state laws related to deregulated energy markets, Eversource is prohibited from generating electricity and is required to purchase power on behalf of customers who’re not enrolled with an alternate supplier. Those costs are passed on with no mark up or profit to the company. With the Hawthorne brush fire continuing to burn and spread on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin, Eversource is closely monitoring electric transmission lines and equipment in the vicinity. To assess any possible damage, the energy company is conducting ongoing aerial surveys on three of its high-voltage power lines, located approximately a mile and a half from where it is believed the fire originated. At the present time, no issues are identified with any electric equipment in the area and no associated power outages are reported. Eversource crews will remain on the ground engaged with emergency officials and will continue to monitor the situation and respond immediately to any problems that may arise, as well as support local and state public safety partners.

Following major energy efficiency upgrades to five community buildings and street lighting, the City of Torrington is now saving about 427,000 kilowatt-hours of power annually – an equivalent of reducing the emissions from more than 760,000 miles driven by a gas-powered car. Working with Eversource and contractor Fulcrum Energy Solutions, the city achieved that goal in less than one year. In addition to upgraded street lighting, multiple energy efficiency improvements were made at the Fire Department, Police Department, Teen Center, Veteran’s Office and Public Works Department.

As Eversource’s outreach and collaboration continues with the state on solutions to provide rate predictability for customers, the energy company today filed a new Standard Service supply rate with Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) that would go into effect July 1. In Connecticut, the energy supply price changes twice a year – January 1 and July 1. Under state law, Eversource does not earn a profit on the cost of electricity and charges customers only what it pays to generators, without markup, to produce the power for customers.

National Engineers Week grid modernization reliability

With the frequency, unpredictability and severity of extreme weather including thunderstorms increasing, our team is working every day to fortify our electric system to withstand the worst of climate change. In addition to impacts like drought-stressed trees falling onto our power lines and intense heat waves straining the grid, our substations have been affected by an increase in the occurrence of lightning incidents that were previously a “worst-case” scenario with a 100-year probability. After lightning strikes caused surges that damaged equipment in substations in Western Massachusetts and South Boston within a three-year period, we assembled a team of engineers, supported by substation operating mechanics who respond to damage during storms, to assess the equipment and control systems at all the approximately 600 substations across our service territory in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
