Winter preparedness: Eversource conducting proactive work to ensure safety, reliability of natural gas system
Nov 10, 2025
BERLIN, Conn. (November 10, 2025) – With the weather turning colder across New England, customers will soon be using more energy to heat their homes and businesses, which leads to increased demand on the natural gas system. When the region experiences extreme cold snaps during the winter, that heightened demand can be even greater, which is why Eversource is taking proactive steps now to prepare. As part of its year-round efforts to manage and maintain the natural gas system, the energy company is conducting routine inspections of its infrastructure and readying equipment ahead of the winter heating season, which is critical to providing safe, reliable service to customers when the temperatures drop.
“Our top priority is operating a safe, reliable natural gas system in compliance with state and federal regulations for all of the communities we serve, and we take advantage of every opportunity to prepare and reinforce our infrastructure before the start of winter, which is when we typically see peak gas demand from our customers,” said Eversource Vice President of Gas Engineering Seth Krueger. “From surveying our gas lines to ensuring our system meets all federal and local safety standards and communicating regularly with our municipal partners, our team completes a comprehensive checklist of proactive work every year, and these forward-looking measures are vital to providing the safe, seamless natural gas service that our customers rely on to stay warm during New England’s coldest days.”
In accordance with federal and state regulations, Eversource completes all required natural gas compliance work before winter begins each year and prioritizes completing all planned gas main projects and repairs before mid-November, when municipalities typically enforce a winter construction moratorium on local roads except for emergency work. The energy company conducts annual surveys of its gas lines and continuously monitors the system to identify any weather-related stress or ground movement so it can be addressed before posing further issues. Additionally, Eversource closely coordinates these activities with municipalities to ensure local officials are informed of the company’s proactive efforts and that communication lines are open ahead of winter’s arrival.
Eversource also encourages customers to take steps to prepare their homes for the winter months and explore energy-saving measures that can help them control their usage while staying warm and comfortable:
- Seal air leaks around doors and windows: Apply weatherstripping or caulk to seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors to stop air leaks and prevent energy loss. Sign up for Home Energy SolutionsSM to have this work, and more, done by an Eversource authorized contractor. Call 877-WISE-USE or visit Eversource.com/home-energy-solutions.
- Reduce the temperature on water heater: Set the temperature on hot water tanks to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or turn on the “warm” setting.
- Change or clean filters: Dirty air filters can lead to dust, dirt, and grime buildup on the heating components, causing the furnace to use more energy and increasing the risk of malfunction. A clean filter can lower energy consumption by 5% to 15%.
- Keep fireplace damper closed when not in use to retain warmth and reduce energy use.
- Keep warm, not hot: When possible, consider wearing an additional layer of clothing, turning down the thermostat and check programmable settings.
- Hold off on doing chores during extremely cold weather: Doing laundry and washing dishes can use natural gas both to heat the water and your dryer. If possible, wait until extremely cold weather passes to complete these activities. If not, use the cold setting if realistic/reasonable.
- Every degree makes a difference. Save energy and money by lowering the thermostat to at least 68 degrees.
- Don’t forget the water heater. Heating a hot water tank can account for as much as 25 percent of the energy consumed in the home. Lower the maximum temperature to 120 degrees.
- Harness the power of the sun. Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home and close them at dark to reduce the chill from cold windows.
