We are continuously working to improve the reliability and resiliency of our system.

Focuses include maintenance activities, station enhancements, transmission and distribution line upgrades and more.

Below are the major projects being worked on in Massachusetts:

Boston

• Andrew Square to Dewar Street Reliability Project - A new transmission line will address reliability concerns in the Boston area.
• Greater Dorchester Area Initiative - There is an imminent need for electrical infrastructure in Boston to enable clean energy delivery and meet electrification goals.
• Mystic to East Eagle to Chelsea Project - Two new transmission lines have been constructed and a new substation will be built to increase electric supply in the area.

Cambridge/Somerville

• Greater Cambridge Energy Program - A new underground substation with new transmission lines interconnecting to existing substations in the surrounding area.
• Union Square to Portland Street Distribution Project - A distribution line upgrade to improve the reliability of the electric system serving Somerville, Cambridge, and the surrounding area. 

Cape Cod

• Cape Cod Solution - A co-optimized, multi-phase transmission program to efficiently and cost-effectively improve electric reliability on Cape Cod and allow for the integration of offshore wind energy.

Martha's Vineyard

• Martha's Vineyard Reliability and 91 Cable Replacement Projects - New lines will interconnect to existing substations in the area and will bolster system capacity and reliability on Martha's Vineyard to meet growing energy needs. These projects will also help facilitate our efforts to decrease our carbon footprint by decommissioning the five existing diesel generators on the Island.

Metro Boston

• Burlington to Woburn Supply Initiative - Construction of a new electrical substation in Burlington connecting to the existing electrical distribution network in the area.

South of Boston

• Acushnet to Fall River Reliability Project - A proposed joint project by Eversource and National Grid to enhance reliability in the region.
• Carver to Kingston Reliability Project - A proposed new 115-kilovolt transmission line between Carver and Kingston.

West of Boston

• 350 Irving Street Framingham Remediation Project - Cleaning byproducts left behind by a former Manufactured Gas Plant to protect our environment and remove potential exposure pathways.
• Chestnut Street to Highland Avenue Distribution Project - Supporting electrical distribution enhancements to accommodate regional infrastructure initiatives, and designed to improve reliability of the electric system in the Needham area.
• Sudbury to Hudson Project - A new transmission line between Sudbury and Hudson, Mass., improving Greater Boston's electric system reliability.

Underground Cable Modernization

• Underground Cable Modernization - Modernizing and increasing the capacity of the existing underground transmission cable systems by replacing existing fluid-filled cable with cross-linked polyethylene cable. Lines are West Springfield to Springfield, Acushnet to New Bedford and Hopkinton to Milford.

Geothermal

• Geothermal Pilot Project - A Framingham neighborhood will be the site of a first-of-its-kind, innovative networked heating and cooling system using renewable power from the earth.

Natural Gas Projects

• Western Massachusetts Natural Gas Reliability Project - A proposal to install, update and operate a steel main between a new point-of-delivery (POD) station in Longmeadow and the Bliss Street Regulator Station in Springfield to improve reliability to the area.
