Greater Cambridge Energy Project
Why Are We Doing This Project?
Our proposed upgrades will bolster system reliability, meet growing energy needs and further facilitate access to clean energy resources for our customers.
Where Is This Work Being Done?
We propose to construct a new underground substation in Kendall Square, Cambridge, along with five underground duct banks housing eight new 115-kilovolt (kV) underground transmission lines interconnecting to existing substations in the surrounding area.
The new substation will be located between Broadway and Binney Street and will be integrated into Boston Properties’ redevelopment plans for the Kendall Center Blue Garage.
Above the underground substation will be an open and accessible public space.
The project also requires five underground duct banks housing eight new 115-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines, interconnecting the new substation to an existing substation in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood of Boston, existing substations at Kendall, as well as Putnam Avenue in Cambridge and the existing substation at Prospect Street in Somerville.

Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB)
To construct and operate the five new 115-kV transmission lines, Eversource must file a petition with the EFSB for approval. The petition filing is part of the regulatory review process, as defined by Massachusetts state statutes.
Eversource submitted a siting petition to the EFSB on March 10, 2022. The EFSB’s docket is available for viewing in the organization’s file room.
The EFSB will hold a Public Comment Hearings beginning on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 6 p.m. remotely using Zoom video conferencing, where individuals and groups affected by the initial petition will have opportunity to voice feedback to the Siting Board.
