Why Are We Doing This Project?

Charlestown's growth is driving an increased need for reliable electricity. To meet this demand and keep homes, businesses and critical facilities powered, we're strengthening the existing electric grid.

This project includes constructing a new substation and installing underground transmission lines to enhance reliability. We will be working in collaboration with the community and guided by our commitment to equity.

This project is also part of our Electric Sector Modernization Plan (ESMP), a 10-year plan to support a statewide initiative to modernize the grid, support Massachusetts’ clean energy goals, and expand the capacity of the electrical infrastructure.

This project is designed to deliver:

  • Reliability – The ability to meet the electric demand and energy requirements of our customers without service interruptions.
  • Resiliency - The ability to strengthen the power grid to provide protection from extreme weather.
  • Clean energy – Connecting a growing number of clean resources to the grid and ensuring readiness to meet an increased electric demand.
