Why Are We Doing This Project?
The Greater Dorchester Area Initiative includes the construction of a new substation that will connect to the existing electric grid and new underground transmission lines, as well as distribution line work. The Greater Dorchester area has seen steady growth and an increased demand for electricity over the past several years. To help meet the community’s growing energy needs and provide reliable, and increasingly clean energy our customers deserve, upgrades are essential.
The new substation that is part of the Greater Dorchester Area Initiative (formerly referred to as Hyde Park to Dorchester Supply Initiative) will help relieve heavily loaded existing area substations and support future development and electrification growth needed to reach Boston’s clean energy goals.
This project is part of our Electric Sector Modernization Plan (ESMP), a 10-year plan to enable Massachusetts’ Climate Law, there is a need to improve reliability and grow the capacity of the electrical infrastructure that supports the greater Dorchester area of Boston.
Where Is The Work Being Done?
Project activity and work locations will be throughout the Boston neighborhoods of Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roslindale and West Roxbury.
The Greater Dorchester Area Initiative is one of several planned infrastructure projects in Metro-Boston needed to support the growing demand for electricity. As these areas continue to grow, Eversource must upgrade or build new infrastructure to ensure all customers have equitable access to the benefits of a reliable electric system.
