A Busy Day Serving Our Kent Community

One of our crews had a busy day in Kent last month.

As a lineworker, it is part of the job to work together. But these incidents required additional communication and coordination with police and fire officials and dispatch throughout the day and into the evening.

“It’s all stuff we do on a regular basis but, you are trying to do it quickly with a fire situation and a woman trapped in a car,” said Peter Abrahamsen, the crew's leader. “You’re trying to do it at a faster pace and not have any problems. That’s the only thing that is different.”

Fire at the KenMont and KenWood summer camp

The Torrington-based crew was already working in Kent when they got the emergency call to head to the KenMont and KenWood summer camp where a building was on fire. Their assignment was to cut power to the camp, making it safe for firefighters to battle the blaze.

Through the smoke from the fire, they moved through the woods to find the lines. The crew successfully cut power to the camp to allow the firefighters to safely do their work. In the end, three buildings were destroyed but no one was injured.

Fallen tree on line catches fire

The team left the summer camp and headed to Town Hill Road where a tree had fallen on a line and caught fire. They made the area safe, but couldn't finish repairs because they received an emergency call about a live wire on a car with a woman inside on Route 7.

Live wire on a vehicle

The team arrived just after a troubleshooter specialist colleague removed the line from the car.

It was a busy scene with police and firefighters on site. Route 7 is a two-lane road with minimal shoulders and drivers were trying to get past the accident. Our crew worked with flaggers to help the flow of traffic.

Abrahamsen coordinated restoration efforts while others repaired the downed line.

Once their work was done on Route 7, the team returned to Town Hill Road to finish their earlier job where a tree had fallen on a line and caught fire.

One last stop

Before they could head home, the crew received a call to help at Muller Road where trees had taken down a utility pole with a transformer and other equipment on it, blocking the road.

“We made a decision as a crew to get the road clear and get the pole and transformer out of the way," Abrahamsen said. “There was damage down the whole road. By the time we were done, we had cleared a path so that the tree crews could get in and residents could leave if they wished.”

Thirteen hours after their day had begun, the Torrington-based crew started to head home.
