As Global Market Volatility Continues, Winter Energy Supply Prices Remain Near All-Time Highs

Dec 8, 2022

Eversource highlights programs and assistance available to help customers in advance of slight decrease to Default Service Rate pending for Feb. 1

MANCHESTER, N.H. (December 8, 2022) – With energy prices remaining near record highs this winter, Eversource is working to connect its customers with the many programs and services available to help manage their energy bill ahead of the February 1 electric supply rate decrease. While customers are facing rising costs in virtually all aspects of life, the energy company is reminding them of the variety of payment options and assistance programs including New Start, Discount Rate, Budget Billing and other state and federal resources.

“Our customers in New Hampshire have already faced the unprecedented impact of all-time high energy supply costs earlier than most this year, and we know how frustrated they are as rising costs for other basic, daily needs persist throughout the economy as well,” said Eversource Executive Vice President, Customer Experience and Energy Strategy Penni Conner. “While this decrease in electric supply costs is encouraging, global market volatility continues to keep prices near all-time highs and pose significant challenges for our customers. We’re here to work with our customers one-on-one on ways to reduce their energy usage and connect them with assistance programs, flexible payment plans or other resources to help them manage their monthly bill.”

Help is available. Eversource has options for everyone.

Today, the energy company filed new electricity prices from power suppliers for customers in New Hampshire with the Public Utilities Commission that would be in effect from February 1, 2023, through July 31, 2023. If approved, the proposed Default Service Rate for residential and small business customers in New Hampshire who receive their energy supply from Eversource would decrease from 22.6 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 20.2 cents per kWh, compared to approximately 10.7 cents per kWh from February 2022 through July 2022. On average, an Eversource residential electric customer in New Hampshire who uses 600 kilowatt hours of power each month could see a decrease of approximately 7% over their current monthly bill – or approximately $14.07 per month – on the supply portion of the bill.

In New Hampshire, the energy supply price changes twice a year – February 1 and August 1 – representing the cost that Eversource pays generators for the power that customers use. Eversource only charges customers what it pays generators for producing the power – it does not earn a profit on the cost of electricity. How much a customer pays will ultimately depend on how much energy is used, their rate category, and weather conditions. All Eversource customers have the option to buy their power from state-approved third-party suppliers or to receive the energy company’s Default Service Rate, and communities across New Hampshire are also establishing community power programs as another option for customers in those communities. Customers can find out more information about competitive supplier rates at the Department of Energy’s website.

As has been widely reported, energy costs continue to rise globally, with regional electric supply prices reaching all-time highs this year due to increased global demand for and the high cost of natural gas, world events, extreme weather, and other issues.

Eversource encourages customers to enroll in one of its payment plans or assistance programs if they need help with their energy bill, and the energy company also offers energy efficiency solutions to help customers use less energy and better manage costs. Regular webinars are hosted to provide customers with more information about protection from service disconnection, programs to reduce unpaid balances with affordable monthly payments, extended payment plans and no-cost energy efficiency programs that can help lower energy usage. Customers can learn more information about the various programs available to help and view a recording of the most recent webinar held on December 6 at
