Hurricane Season preparedness NOAA

As the ocean waters churn along the east coast and another hurricane season begins, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting above-normal activity for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Between June 1 and November 30, NOAA is forecasting a 60% chance of an above-normal season with 6-10 hurricanes having winds of 74 mph or higher and 3-5 major hurricanes with winds 111 mph or higher. With the changing climate increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather around the globe, including here in New England, Eversource is reminding customers to plan and always be prepared for severe weather. The energy company works year-round to safeguard the electric grid through upgrades, maintenance, and proactive vegetation management to ensure reliability for customers.

Main Streets energy efficiency small business

Stringing electric lines is part of the job for Eversource lineworkers, but today they’re using their bucket trucks and skills for a different kind of project – stringing ropes for a challenge course at a summer camp in Ashford. Several lineworkers along with more than a dozen other Eversource employees are volunteering at the June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation Camp as part of Scouting America’s Day of Caring. The volunteers are helping to prepare and improve the camp before the 2025 summer season – working on landscaping, tree trimming, electrical work, and much-needed trail maintenance, in addition to installing the new ropes course.

As warmer weather arrives in Connecticut and customers start cranking up the air conditioner to beat the heat, a new lower Standard Service supply rate was filed today with Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) that would go into effect July 1. The new Standard Service rate for residential customers receiving energy supply through Eversource would change from the current 11.19 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 9.75 cents per kWh starting July 1. For the typical residential customer using 700 kWh per month, that’s a decrease of approximately $10, or 5%, on their total bill.

Roughly half of New England’s electricity is produced using natural gas, and seasonal demand for the fuel drives up the price power generators charge. Under state laws related to deregulated energy markets, Eversource is prohibited from generating electricity and is required to purchase power on behalf of customers who’re not enrolled with an alternate supplier. Those costs are passed on with no mark up or profit to the company. With the Hawthorne brush fire continuing to burn and spread on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin, Eversource is closely monitoring electric transmission lines and equipment in the vicinity. To assess any possible damage, the energy company is conducting ongoing aerial surveys on three of its high-voltage power lines, located approximately a mile and a half from where it is believed the fire originated. At the present time, no issues are identified with any electric equipment in the area and no associated power outages are reported. Eversource crews will remain on the ground engaged with emergency officials and will continue to monitor the situation and respond immediately to any problems that may arise, as well as support local and state public safety partners.
