With the start of a new year, Eversource is reminding customers of the various options available to help them manage their energy bills with financial assistance, flexible payment plans and energy efficiency programs. The company is hosting a free in-person event for residents in several central Connecticut communities, including New Britain, Bristol, Burlington, Farmington, Plainville, and Plymouth on January 16th. Eversource customer care representatives will provide details on programs to reduce unpaid balances with affordable monthly payments, protection from service disconnection, extended payment plans and no- and low-cost energy efficiency programs available to help lower monthly energy bills. Payment plan enrollment and participation prevents service shutoff year-round and allows customers to catch up on their energy bill.

As winter approaches, Eversource is reminding customers they can take control of their energy costs by shopping for a third-party supplier before an expected supply rate increase that typically occurs at the beginning of each year. Roughly half of New England’s electricity is produced using natural gas, and seasonal demand for the fuel drives up the price power generators charge. Under state laws related to deregulated energy markets, Eversource is prohibited from generating electricity and is required to purchase power on behalf of customers who’re not enrolled with an alternate supplier. Those costs are passed on with no mark up or profit to the company. In anticipation of the higher cost of electricity, customers are encouraged to compare rates being offered by third-party suppliers on EnergizeCT.com. With the Hawthorne brush fire continuing to burn and spread on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin, Eversource is closely monitoring electric transmission lines and equipment in the vicinity. To assess any possible damage, the energy company is conducting ongoing aerial surveys on three of its high-voltage power lines, located approximately a mile and a half from where it is believed the fire originated. At the present time, no issues are identified with any electric equipment in the area and no associated power outages are reported. Eversource crews will remain on the ground engaged with emergency officials and will continue to monitor the situation and respond immediately to any problems that may arise, as well as support local and state public safety partners.

Following major energy efficiency upgrades to five community buildings and street lighting, the City of Torrington is now saving about 427,000 kilowatt-hours of power annually – an equivalent of reducing the emissions from more than 760,000 miles driven by a gas-powered car. Working with Eversource and contractor Fulcrum Energy Solutions, the city achieved that goal in less than one year. In addition to upgraded street lighting, multiple energy efficiency improvements were made at the Fire Department, Police Department, Teen Center, Veteran’s Office and Public Works Department.

Energy supply energy bills energy saving tips

As Eversource’s outreach and collaboration continues with the state on solutions to provide rate predictability for customers, the energy company today filed a new Standard Service supply rate with Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) that would go into effect July 1. If approved by PURA, the new rate for residential customers receiving energy supply from Eversource would change from the current 14.71 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 8.99 cents per kWh. In Connecticut, the energy supply price changes twice a year – January 1 and July 1. Under state law, Eversource does not earn a profit on the cost of electricity and charges customers only what it pays to generators, without markup, to produce the power for customers.

National Engineers Week grid modernization reliability

With the frequency, unpredictability and severity of extreme weather including thunderstorms increasing, our team is working every day to fortify our electric system to withstand the worst of climate change. In addition to impacts like drought-stressed trees falling onto our power lines and intense heat waves straining the grid, our substations have been affected by an increase in the occurrence of lightning incidents that were previously a “worst-case” scenario with a 100-year probability. After lightning strikes caused surges that damaged equipment in substations in Western Massachusetts and South Boston within a three-year period, we assembled a team of engineers, supported by substation operating mechanics who respond to damage during storms, to assess the equipment and control systems at all the approximately 600 substations across our service territory in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Rates

In an effort to shield customers from rate shock expected May 1, Eversource has engaged multiple state agencies and policymakers to collaborate on a thoughtful solution for customers. Over several years, state regulators have changed how electric distribution companies charge for supply and other costs that are covered by electric companies for customers. These supply charges and other annual costs are passed through reconciling rates, outside of base rates. Most of the increased costs for customers would be reflected in the Public Benefits portion of their electric bills. This new method changed how those costs are calculated, leading to a significant delay in collecting reconciled costs and leading to the prospect of a $38 per month rate increase later this year. Also causing the rate increase is the high number of unpaid customer balances going back multiple years during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overdue customer balances are paid for by all customers. Any collaborative proposal for rate stabilization would be subject to review and approval by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

Eversource’s massive team of lineworkers continues working nonstop to restore power to customers following this week’s intense rain and wind storm. Hundreds of line and tree crews are making necessary repairs to the electric system across the state to restore power to the remaining customers affected by the storm. As of 4:00 p.m., the energy company has restored power to more than 178,000 customers since the storm began and approximately 14,000 Eversource customers remain without power. Eversource expects to have power restored to most customers affected by this storm by 11 p.m. Wednesday, with many being restored before that . An estimated time of restoration for each town can be found online .

Hundreds of Eversource line and tree crews are working to restore power following the powerful rain and windstorm that hit Connecticut overnight and this morning causing widespread damage to the electric system and tens of thousands of power outages. Crews are working around-the-clock shifts to address emergency situations, clear blocked roads, assess damage and restore power to customers impacted by the storm. Eversource system operators were able to restore power to 42,000 customers within minutes of their outage by rerouting power. In total, as of approximately 12:00 p.m., power has been restored to more than 82,000 customers since the storm began. Approximately 76,000 Eversource customers in Connecticut remained without power as a result of the severe storm.

Chris will continue to serve the company as a non-executive Senior Advisor into 2024.

As energy market volatility continues, Eversource customers can expect to pay less this winter than last on the supply portion of their bill. Energy prices hit historic highs in New England last year due to international factors that affect the seasonal cost of natural gas, which is used to produce roughly half of New England’s electricity. Today the energy company filed new electric supply prices from power generators with Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) that would be 39% lower than last winter. If approved, the new Standard Service rate for residential customers who receive their energy supply from Eversource will be 14.71 cents per kWh – significantly lower than last winter’s supply rate of 24.17 cents per kWh. This is a slight increase from the current summer rate of 13.82 cents per kWh. If approved by PURA, the new Standard Service rate would be in effect from January 1 to June 30, 2024.
