Standard Service rate Energy supply Assistance third-party suppliers

As energy market volatility continues, Eversource customers can expect to pay less this winter than last on the supply portion of their bill. Energy prices hit historic highs in New England last year due to international factors that affect the seasonal cost of natural gas, which is used to produce roughly half of New England’s electricity. Today the energy company filed new electric supply prices from power generators with Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) that would be 39% lower than last winter. If approved, the new Standard Service rate for residential customers who receive their energy supply from Eversource will be 14.71 cents per kWh – significantly lower than last winter’s supply rate of 24.17 cents per kWh. This is a slight increase from the current summer rate of 13.82 cents per kWh. If approved by PURA, the new Standard Service rate would be in effect from January 1 to June 30, 2024.

A new Low-Income Discount Rate will be available for Eversource financial hardship customers in Connecticut beginning in December 2023. Depending on their household income, eligible customers will receive 10% or 50% off their electric bills per month. For example, if a customer has a $100 monthly bill, it would be $10 less if they receive a 10% discount or $50 less if they receive the 50% discount. Customers must have a financial hardship status on their electric account to receive the discount on their bill.

As the price of energy continues to trend downward, Eversource today filed a new Standard Service rate with Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) which would go into effect from July 1 to Dec. 31, 2023. This comes after energy prices hit historic highs in New England last year due to natural gas supply constraints related to the continued war in Ukraine and global demand. If approved by PURA, the new rate for residential customers who receive their energy supply from Eversource would change from the current 24.17 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 13.82 cents per kWh, compared to 12.19 cents per kWh last summer. In Connecticut, the energy supply price changes twice a year – January 1 and July 1. Eversource does not earn a profit on the cost of electricity. The company only charges customers what it pays generators for producing the power and there is no markup. A customer’s total bill will depend on how much energy is used, their rate category, and weather conditions.

Hundreds of Eversource line and tree crews are working to restore power as the nor’easter moves through Connecticut delivering heavy snow, rain and wind causing damage and power outages primarily in Litchfield County. With a massive team of line and tree crews working around the clock alongside hundreds of out-of-state utility workers, Eversource has restored power to more than 201,000 customers despite freezing temperatures and hazardous winds following the pre-Christmas rain and windstorm. Restoration work in all 149 communities that the energy company serves in Connecticut is now substantially complete, meaning 99% of customers in that community impacted by the storm have their power back. More than 1,100 crews have been working and are focused on the remaining scattered outages across the state.
