The scent of sizzling hot dogs from the Live Line trailer filled the air as 100+ curious kids explored the world of energy during Eversource Day at the Hartford Boys and Girls Club. Now in its second year, the event welcomed students ages 6–12 to the South End club for a hands-on introduction to STEM and careers in utilities.

“Kids can say, ‘Hey! I didn’t know this job existed.’ Hopefully, it inspires them to consider a career at Eversource—right here in their own community,” Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford President and CEO Bruce Jeffery said of the event’s impact.

Students interacted with a wide range of utility professionals, trying on protective gear and testing equipment used by underground and overhead lineworkers. They got a glimpse into the daily work of gas engineers, lineworkers, meter mechanics, and more.

A crowd favorite, the Live Line trailer, safely demonstrates the power and danger of electricity—using a hot dog to show what happens when it contacts energized lines.

The Energize Connecticut Energy in Action mobile exhibit invited kids to conduct energy-saving experiments and encouraged them to make smart, energy-saving decisions each day. Eversource’s Green Team, an employee-led group that develops and advances sustainability initiatives, offered seeds, a planting station, and demos of how to repurpose household items. Community Relations employees distributed books in English and Spanish for kids to read with siblings at home.

“We jumped at the chance to partner with the Boys and Girls Club,” said our Senior Supervisor Christopher Flynn, who operated the Live Line demo. “It’s a great cause, and we believe it’s important to spark interest at a young age.
