Local Officials Voice Support for Clean Energy Project that will Enhance System Resiliency
WESTMORELAND, N.H. (June 27, 2019) – In order to highlight its proposed Westmoreland Clean Innovation Project and to engage community members with the project, Eversource yesterday hosted a community briefing at Westmoreland School in partnership with town and county officials. With remarks and presentations by Eversource representatives and local officials, Westmoreland residents learned about how the clean innovation project will significantly reduce the frequency and duration of power outages in the town, avoid construction of a new overhead power line and provide important lessons to enable a more reliable and affordable clean energy future for New Hampshire.
“The Westmoreland Clean Innovation Project will significantly enhance reliability for local customers and it will play a critical role in New Hampshire’s clean energy transformation,” said Eversource Director of Clean Energy Strategy, Policy, and Development Charlotte Ancel. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to engage with the community on this exciting clean energy project, and we look forward to continued collaboration with local officials as we work together to solve the future energy needs of the region.”
At the community briefing, Eversource detailed the three main complementary parts of the proposed project: the installation of a 1.7 MW/7.1 MWh lithium ion battery that will provide back-up power for up to four hours; locally targeted energy efficiency initiatives; and a “Bring Your Own Device” program that provides incentives to participating residential customers whose customer-owned batteries, Wi-Fi thermostats or other devices are used during peak demand for load reduction.
“The county is excited about this project because it will help make a small town like Westmoreland a leader in clean energy transformation with a low-carbon grid while ensuring service to critical facilities like the nursing home during outages,” said Chris Coates, Cheshire County Administrator.
Served by one major power line in a rural portion of the state, the Town of Westmoreland has been more prone to outages when compared to other communities in recent years. The Westmoreland Clean Innovation Project will help ensure continued service to nearly 450 residential customers, local businesses, and critical facilities like the Westmoreland School, fire station, and county nursing home during emergencies and other interruptions. As a “non-wires alternative,” the project will allow the company to avoid construction of a $6 million, 10-mile distribution circuit to improve reliability. Over the course of its life, the project is expected to deliver cost savings to Eversource customers, significantly improve reliability to the town based on historic outage data, help manage energy use during times of peak demand and reduce greenhouse gas emission while informing similar clean energy projects in the future.
