Company working to make the efficient fuel source available to more Connecticut communities
BERLIN, Conn. – The recent cold snap that brought frigid temperatures to Connecticut is a firm reminder of just how brutal winters can be in New England. Eversource is working to make natural gas available to more communities around the state, giving people another fuel to heat their homes or businesses. As part of the company’s on-going system expansion plans, work to bring the cleaner-burning fuel source to Oxford and Stonington is scheduled to begin this spring. Terms are also being finalized on a large-scale plan in Darien to bring natural gas to the town’s municipal buildings, schools, several homes and three community revitalization projects.
“We’ve heard from thousands of people who are interested in converting to a more efficient and environmentally-friendly fuel,” said William Akley, President of Gas Operations for Eversource. “Not only are we eager to get this year’s projects underway, but we look forward to increasing the opportunity to deliver the benefits of reliable and domestic natural gas to more customers.”
In 2015, Eversource installed nearly 14 miles of new gas main in parts of Bozrah, Danbury, Franklin, Putnam, Southington, Vernon, and Waterbury. Kevin Santini, the owner of several apartment complexes in Vernon, is one of those who recently made the switch to natural gas. Santini knows first-hand that winter heating costs in New England can be daunting. Over the last three years, his company, Santini Homes, converted 34 of its buildings from oil to natural gas and is already seeing the benefits.
“Making the switch was quick and easy, and the payback time on our investment will be under three years,” said Santini. “We’ve also significantly reduced our staff time in monitoring and servicing the old oil-fired boilers. It's a great feeling knowing the gas is available and there when my residents need it.”
The vast uses of natural gas make it one of the most versatile forms of energy for everyday life, including water heating, clothes drying, and cooking, as well as barbecuing, fueling firepits, and even heating swimming pools and hot tubs. With more customers looking to benefit from the usefulness of natural gas and as part of the state’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy, Eversource’s expansion work will continue for the next several years.
