Company to upgrade 20 miles of gas lines in 2017

BERLIN, Conn. – As part of Eversource’s effort to modernize its natural gas distribution system for customers, the company is investing $50 million in gas line improvement projects in Connecticut in 2017. The work involves replacing approximately 20 miles of existing cast iron and steel pipe with new specialized plastic pipe, which is safer, more durable and better able to handle fluctuations in underground temperatures.

“Safely delivering a reliable supply of clean, convenient natural gas is the most important service we can provide our customers,” said Bill Akley, President of Gas Operations at Eversource. “So each year, we review the system’s performance and identify areas to make necessary and valuable improvements to maintain a first-rate natural gas distribution system.”

In the past six years, Eversource has replaced nearly 120 miles of older gas lines. Building on that commitment this year, Eversource is currently upgrading gas lines in New London, replacing more than two miles of pipe in the Ocean Beach section of town. Another two miles of pipe is being replaced in the Shippan area of Stamford. Replacement work will continue throughout the year in several additional communities including Meriden, Middletown, Putnam and Wallingford.

Eversource works closely with community leaders and customers where work is being done to minimize the impact to traffic and coordinate other roadwork happening in the town. Customers may experience a short disruption to service when the new gas line is being activated and they will be notified in advance by letter, phone or in-person visit. The company aims to have all 2017 gas pipe improvements completed by November.
