Business Energy-Saving Tips for Spring
Keep employees and customers comfortable while keeping costs down
- Use natural ventilation to take advantage of the spring breeze by opening windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate through your business, reducing the need for air conditioning.
- Unplug electronics to prevent "phantom" energy consumption when not in use. Consider purchasing an advanced power strip for your business to help prevent electronics from continuing to draw power when they are turned off.
- Use a dehumidifier to remove excess humidity which makes your business feel cooler at a higher temperature. This allows you to set your thermostat a bit higher during the warmer months, reducing the workload on your air conditioning system and saving energy. An ENERGY STARĀ® certified dehumidifier uses 13 percent less energy than the average dehumidifier.
- Promote Energy Awareness. Educate employees about energy-saving practices and encourage them to adopt energy-conscious behaviors, such as turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use.
- Use ENERGY STAR certified LED light bulbs. Traditional incandescent bulbs release 90 percent of the energy they use as heat. LEDs are much more efficient, emit very little heat and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting according to ENERGY STAR.
- Upgrade HVAC systems and ensure your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are in good condition. Clean or replace filters regularly and consider upgrading to energy-efficient models if needed.
- Install programmable thermostats to adjust temperature settings based on business hours. This prevents unnecessary energy usage during off-hours or hours no one is present in your business.
- Seal air leaks. Inspect doors, windows, and other openings for air leaks. Seal gaps with weather stripping to prevent cold or warm air from leaking out.
- Optimize your energy settings. Adjust energy settings on equipment and appliances to lower energy consumption. For example, set computers to sleep mode after a period of inactivity.
