Electrification Demonstration Project

en español

Your Home. Your Choice. Our Support.

The Electrification Demonstration Project (EDP) offers eligible customers the chance to upgrade their homes with modern electric heating, cooling and appliances with no upfront cost. This project is being considered in select neighborhoods in Springfield and Carver, Massachusetts.

About the Project

This project directly supports Massachusetts’ new regulatory framework for natural gas distribution by creating a pilot program to examine replacing aging gas infrastructure with electric alternatives to minimize system investment and help meet their climate goals.

For customers, upgrading to an all-electric home can increase comfort and help safely retire the gas system on their street — reducing the future need to invest in replacing aging gas infrastructure.

State regulators are looking to learn about:

  • Cost-effective alternatives to traditional gas infrastructure projects and how to optimize ratepayer investments into the future.
  • Best practices for effectively communicating with and transitioning participating customers to electric air source heat pumps.

The DPU must approve the EDP before we and the selected neighborhoods can begin implementation. A decision from the DPU about the demonstration project is estimated to be received in early 2027, though the timeline is subject to change.

What’s Included

  • High-efficiency electric heat pumps for heating and cooling
  • Heat pump water heater
  • Replacement of gas appliances (e.g., stove, dryer)
  • Weatherization (e.g., insulation, air sealing)
  • Pre-weatherization barriers and electrical panel upgrades, if needed

Will This Increase Your Bills

Energy costs will vary depending on individual household usage patterns and electric rates. Some customers may see different billing outcomes as energy use shifts from gas to electric.

However, improved weatherization measures and the efficiency of modern heat pump systems can help manage overall energy costs along with a newly designed heat pump rate. To better understand potential impacts based on your home's specific usage, we recommend using our heating cost comparison calculator.

Working With Your Community

We’re working closely with local leaders and residents to ensure the project reflects the needs and priorities of the selected neighborhoods.

In addition, we will be hosting community meetings and going door-to-door to speak directly with residents, answer questions and provide personalized information. All those conducting customer outreach on this project are Eversource employees or our partners at Archipelago Strategies Group. Anyone conducting outreach will always have proper Eversource identification.

Participation at any level is entirely optional. There are no obligations or penalties for opting out, and customers who do so will continue to receive safe and reliable natural gas service. Those who choose to participate will transition away from natural gas service as part of the upgrade.

How We Chose Project Locations

We did a comprehensive review of our natural gas service territory and identified areas where the existing gas pipe would likely be scheduled for replacement in the coming years. We then narrowed the options to communities we serve with electricity, and then strategically selected zones and streets that would not impact gas system reliability upon gas pipe retirement.

Anticipated Timeline

  • Community engagement and outreach: Fall 2025
  • Customer interest and feedback: Fall 2025
  • Project proposal submission to DPU: Spring 2026*
