Why Are We Doing This Project?

As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver reliable energy and superior service, we are replacing two existing 115-kilovolt (kV) underground transmission lines in the Hartford area.

These two existing transmission lines, installed in 1974, are past their expected operating life of 40 years and the material is no longer being widely produced by manufacturers.

Where Is This Work Being Done?

The 1704 underground transmission line runs from the Southwest Hartford Substation to South Meadow Substation, and the 1722 line runs from Southwest Hartford Substation to Northwest Hartford Substation.

Construction and Traffic Updates

This work will not interrupt your electric service, and all people working on this project are Eversource-approved contractors who carry proper identification.

Schedules are subject to change. This information is current as of March 6.

Work being done March 9-13


Monday through Friday next week, you may see crews:
We are actively working on the following streets, performing excavation and concrete backfill as part of the duct bank and vault installation process:
 
  • Hendricxsen St.
  • Whitney St. between Asylum Ave and Elizabeth St.
  • Whitney St. between Elizabeth St. and Farmington Ave.
  • South Whitney St. between Capitol Ave and Park St.
  • South Whitney St. & Capitol Ave Intersection
  • Whitney St. & Fern St. Intersection
 
Tree removal work will continue on Whitney St. 
Test pit work will occur from Warrenton Ave. to Farmington Ave.
 
Please follow local traffic signage.
 
Temporary street closure and parking restrictions may be placed on the following streets. The roads listed below are open to local traffic only. Pedestrian traffic has shifted. Please pay attention to posted signage:
 
  • Hendricxsen St.
  • Whitney St. between Asylum Ave and Elizabeth St. *
  • Whitney St between Elizabeth St. and Farmington Ave. *
  • South Whitney St. between Capitol Ave and Park St.**
  • South Whitney St. & Capitol Ave Intersection
  • South Whitney St. & Fern St. Intersection
 
*Northbound lane on Whitney St is closed (opened to local traffic only). Southbound lane open.
**Southbound lane on South Whitney St is closed (opened to local traffic only). Northbound lane open.
All residents will have access to their homes and businesses.
 
Work hours: 
 
7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
 
Locations and hours are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

  • Project restoration: Mid-2028*
