As temperatures begin to cool and winter weather approaches, natural gas customers will soon be turning on their heating systems, causing increased usage that will translate into larger bills for gas customers during the winter. Regular rate changes for natural gas customers are scheduled to take place on November 1 as the region transitions from the off-peak summer gas season to the peak winter gas season. This year, Eversource natural gas customers will also notice a redesign of their bill format – reflecting direct feedback from customers and communities – making the bill easier to read and understand.

With the potential for the first heat wave of the year in the forecast, bringing temperatures well into the 90s and high humidity later this weekend and into next week, air conditioners and fans will be working overtime at many homes and businesses. During the summer months, Eversource customers in Massachusetts use about 30% more electricity to keep cool when the mercury soars, and that increase can be even greater when the state experiences multiple heat waves like it did last year. While high electricity usage during a heat wave can put a strain on the electric system, the energy company is prepared to meet the increased demand and its crews are ready to respond to any outages or issues that may arise. Eversource system operators are constantly monitoring the system and are ready to reroute power and shift other resources as necessary.

NOAA Hurricane Season

As the ocean waters churn along the east coast and another hurricane season begins, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting above-normal activity for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Between June 1 and November 30, NOAA is forecasting a 60% chance of an above-normal season with 6–10 hurricanes having winds of 74 mph or higher and 3–5 major hurricanes with winds 111 mph or higher.

As part of its ongoing efforts to provide safe, reliable electric service while being responsible stewards of the environment, Eversource today hosted its annual turtle protection program – Turtle-Palooza! – to strengthen its workers’ expertise protecting endangered turtles that call its rights-of-way home. Eversource today announced the energization of the Sudbury to Hudson Transmission Reliability Project, which marks the completion of Eversource and National Grid’s Greater Boston and New Hampshire Solution to strengthen the resiliency of the region’s electric transmission system against extreme weather and improve reliability for customers. Eversource has not developed specific plans for the site at this time, but its strategic location, historic use, and existing infrastructure uniquely position it as a potential multi-use energy interconnection hub for large-scale renewable energy sources – including onshore or offshore wind, hydro, battery storage and nuclear among others – with the capacity to support electrification and meet the reliability needs for major energy users in the region. Over the coming year, Eversource will collaborate closely with Massachusetts and Everett officials and other stakeholders to develop a plan for the property, which is adjacent to the site of the proposed soccer stadium in Everett, to improve electric reliability in New England while also helping to advance Massachusetts’ electrification and decarbonization goals.
