MANCHESTER, N.H. (March 17, 2023) – Following this week’s powerful nor’easter—the 10th major storm of the season—which caused widespread outages and damage to the electric system, Eversource deployed more than 2,200 line, tree, and service crews across the state to work around-the-clock to restore power to its customers. Despite historic snowfall in parts of the state, damaging wind gusts, and extremely difficult travel conditions, the energy company has restored power to more than 99% of its customers using innovated tools to meet that milestone ahead of schedule. Since the start of the nor’easter on Monday night, Eversource has restored power to more than 243,000 customers by lineworker repairs and remote switching by system operators, and will continue to work until every customer in New Hampshire has their power restored

“This storm caused widespread damage across New Hampshire and presented extra challenges in just getting crews to areas where the damage was, and when you’re talking about a restoration operation of this magnitude, it really took a coordinated effort by hundreds of crews and thousands of Eversource employees in support roles to reach substantial completion ahead of schedule today, “said Eversource New Hampshire President of Electric Operations Doug Foley. “I can’t thank our crews and all of our employees working behind the scenes enough for their hard work in extraordinarily difficult conditions and our customers for their patience and support during the last few days. I want everyone to know we will continue working until every last customer has their lights back on.”

While weather conditions improved following the nor’easter, historic snowfall amounts totaling in feet for parts of the state made it extremely difficulties for crews to access certain areas to make repairs. Eversource dispatched an array of innovative solutions aimed at getting the power back on more quickly for its customers, using everything from helicopter and drone patrols to quickly survey power lines and locate system damage, to track vehicles that can drive through deep snow and get crews into difficult-to-reach spots to perform necessary restoration work. Crews have also used Eversource’s innovative rapid pole technology to help restore power more quickly to customers whose outages were caused when utility poles broke during the storm. Eversource used all of these available tools as part of its effort to expedite power restoration for all of its customers in New Hampshire.

Additionally Eversource continues to provide resources to areas hardest hit by the nor’easter, particularly in western arts of New Hampshire where crews had been able to make significant progress by Friday morning. The energy company continues working in close coordination with many state agencies and municipal partners to meet their needs—including replacing nearly100 broken poles and clearing more than 250 blocked roads. Eversource will stay in close communication with its communities throughout the remainder of the massive restoration operation.

As crews continue their work on isolated pockets of damage and the number of power outages continues to decrease, Eversource will coordinate a safe and orderly demobilization process for the hundreds of crews still in New Hampshire.

Eversource also reminds customers to always stay clear of any downed wires and report them immediately to 911, and customers who use generators for backup power should operate it outdoors, as far away from the home as possible, and away from any air vents, windows and doors.
