Eversource Launches 2025 ‘Main Streets’ in Massachusetts Communities to Connect Small Businesses with Affordable Energy Efficiency Upgrades
Apr 30, 2025
BOSTON and SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 30, 2025) – As part of its ongoing commitment to helping customers across the commonwealth take control of their own energy use with optimized solutions, Eversource is bringing its award-winning Main Streets program to over 35 Massachusetts communities in 2025. Through Main Streets, the Sponsors of Mass Save®, including Eversource, partner with municipalities to connect small business owners with approved contractors who offer energy assessments to discuss upgrades that lower energy use and reduce costs.
“The Main Streets campaign has touched over 70,000 small businesses across Massachusetts and remains an important way to help connect our local businesses with energy-saving solutions,” said Vice President of Energy Efficiency and Electric Mobility Tilak Subrahmanian. “Empowering small business owners with energy efficiency solutions helps them to reduce costs and reinvest in jobs, operations and growth, contributing to more vibrant, resilient communities.”
In 2024, the Eversource-led Main Streets program was named a Leader of the Pack by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), in recognition of its successful efforts to reach historically underserved markets with enhanced financial incentives. Through Main Streets, participants enjoy real cost savings that they can invest back into their business operations. Eversource is proud to have helped more than 3,000 local businesses in Massachusetts reduce their energy use over the past several years, and will continue to focus efforts on reaching micro businesses and environmental justice communities that might not otherwise be aware of the programs and offerings available to them.
After connecting with Eversource experts at a Main Streets event in their town last year, Riverside Boat Club—a nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, MA—received an energy audit and incentives to implement energy efficiency upgrades, including new insulation in the roof and walls of its boathouse. Now, the club is enjoying both reduced annual energy costs and a more comfortable space for members to meet. “The impact of the insulation was immediate,” said Ernest Cook, Riverside Boat Club. “Everyone is so much more comfortable while working out, showering, or attending meetings. Since completing this project, our oil and electricity bills have shown considerable savings, and we’re thrilled with the results."
Main Streets energy efficiency solutions start with an energy assessment to identify energy-saving opportunities for small businesses, such as insulation, occupancy sensors, programmable thermostats, refrigeration controls, compressed air upgrades, lighting controls and more. Improvements like installing aerators and spray valves happen on the spot at no cost to the customer. More involved projects, like the installation of energy-efficient motor controls, are scheduled for a future date.
Eversource offers increased incentives for a range of energy efficiency improvements – up to 100 percent of project costs for nonprofits and customers who rent their spaces, not including heat pumps. Local licensed electricians and energy solutions providers contracted by Eversource will complete approved projects and ensure minimal disruption to daily business operations, and all high-efficiency products installed as part of this initiative include warranties for both materials and labor.
For many small business owners, Main Streets might be their first introduction not only to business incentives but to residential energy efficiency programs as well. All Massachusetts residents – renters or homeowners, moderate or low-income – are eligible for incentives, services and support that can help them to improve their energy efficiency. A Home Energy Assessment is a great place to start and will connect residents with an Energy Specialist who can help them find ways to lower their energy bills.
