Work scheduled to help reduce power outages

BERLIN, Conn. (March 6, 2024) – As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce tree-related power outages, Eversource is addressing trees that threaten electric reliability in communities across the state. The energy company’s vegetation management team is assessing and inspecting trees along 95 miles of electric lines in Glastonbury this year and will perform tree work to maximize reliability for the greatest number of customers.

“With trees being the number one cause of power outages and seeing the damage they can cause to the electric system, especially during storms, trimming overhanging branches and addressing hazard trees is vital,” said Eversource Manager of Vegetation Management Jenna Turner. “Our comprehensive and thoughtful vegetation management program improves electric service for our customers during all types of weather, and we continue to see fewer power outages where this work has been done.”

Crews will begin work in Glastonbury within the next few weeks and continue through mid-to-late summer in the following areas: Hebron and Naubuc Avenues; Hickory, Marilyn, Oakwood, Randolph, Sunny Slope, Sunset and Walnut Drives; Button Ball, Cricket, Forest, Jagger, Peach Tree, and Webster Lanes; Addison, Bellridge, Birch Mountain, Candlewood, Chestnut Hill, Coldbrook, Coleman, Country Club, Curtis, Daly, Diamond Lake, Douglas, Fox Den, Great Swamp, Knob Hill, Little Acres, Marlborough, Manchester, Millstone, Neipsic, Olde Stage, Quarry, Robin, Shoddy Mill, Staples, Stonepost, Wassuc, Wickham, Windham and Wood Pond Roads; Bailey, Bell, East, Griswold, Hill, House, Hubbard, Keeney, Main, Mill, North, Oak, Orchard, Strickland, Sycamore, Thompson and Wells Streets; Birch and East Lake Shore Trails; Moseley Terrace and New London Turnpike.

The energy company is closely coordinating its plan with community leaders and communicating with property owners to explain details of the work being done and their option to keep the wood cut on their property. As a reminder, all contractors carry proper identification, will never ask to enter a private residence, and there is no cost to the property owner for this work.

Residents with questions about the roadside work can contact Glastonbury Tree Warden Gregory A. Foran (gregory.foran@glastonbury-ct.gov) or Eversource arborist Jesse Fedak (860-267-3806; jesse.fedak@eversource.com.)

In addition, the energy company reminds customers that homeowners are responsible for tree maintenance on their own property, including keeping branches away from the lower-voltage service wires connecting their homes and businesses to the main utility lines on the street. Eversource strongly recommends contacting a professional tree service to perform this work. Learn more about the company’s comprehensive vegetation management program.
