Eversource Reminds Customers to Take Action Before Summer Energy Usage Surges

Energy efficiency measures can help lower summer electric bills

BERLIN, Conn. (April 17, 2025) – As warmer weather approaches, Eversource is urging customers to take action now, before the summer months, to lower their energy use and bill. Considering that most of a customer’s bill is based on usage, energy efficiency measures can lead to significant savings, and the energy company is encouraging customers to explore the many solutions and incentive programs available. On average, customers use about 35% more electricity during the summer months, with last year’s record-breaking heat causing usage to rise from June to July by 45%. Even if individual components of rates decrease, the increase in summer usage can still lead to higher bills for customers.

“During the summer, customers typically see their electric usage increase considerably as their air conditioners fight against the scorching temperatures to keep homes and businesses cool, and we all saw the impact that multiple heat waves had on our energy bills last year,” said Eversource President of Connecticut Electric Operations Steve Sullivan. “While we do expect the supply rate to drop in July, that decrease is usually offset by an increase in energy use, and that’s when customers can expect larger electric bills. Now is the time to take advantage of energy efficiency programs and go through your home or business to see if there are any changes you can make, like installing weatherstripping, adding insulation, or switching to LED lights.”

One of Eversource’s most popular energy efficiency offers is the Energize ConnecticutSM Home Energy SolutionsSM program, when a certified technician evaluates a customer’s home energy performance, checking the home to identify places that can be tightened up to save energy and money. The technician makes on-the-spot improvements, like sealing drafty doors and windows, closing air gaps around pipes, and more to help keep the heat out and the cool air in – things that all together can help the customer save up to $180 savings on their annual energy bill.  Electric customers can sign up to have an assessment done at their home for a $75 copay, or no cost for customers who meet income eligibility requirements.

“We encourage customers to take advantage of any and all energy efficiency measures, whether it’s signing up for a Home Energy Solutions visit or shifting your schedule a bit so you’re operating major appliances during the cooler parts of the day,” said Eversource Energy Efficiency Manager Ricardo Jordan. “Some of the tips we offer may seem simple, but all of these small changes together can really make a big difference and result in a drop in your electric usage, which will be reflected in your bill.”

Things customers can do to manage energy usage this summer:

  • Keep air conditioners set as warm as comfort allows. For every degree higher on the thermostat, the air conditioner will use 1-3% less electricity.
  • Don’t block air flow. Keep air vents and heat pump vents clear of obstructions such as furniture, curtains, and rugs.
  • Operate major appliances during the cooler parts of the day. Energy is conserved by using appliances that create heat, like clothes dryers and dishwashers, early in the morning or late in the evening. There is also less demand on the electric system during these times.
  • Keep blinds closed to prevent unwanted direct sunlight from entering a home through windows. Using curtains, shades, and blinds can lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees.
  • Switch to ENERGY STAR® certified LED lights. The energy-efficient bulbs run cooler and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lights.
  • Set ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise and at a higher speed in the summer to circulate the air more effectively, creating a cooling, wind chill effect. Remember to turn the fan off when leaving the room.
