Eversource Continues Electric System Upgrades in Waterbury

upgrades Waterbury system reliability

Energy company investing $12 million over three years to enhance reliability for northside city customers

BERLIN, Conn. (April 25, 2023) – As part of its year-round commitment to providing reliable power to its customers, Eversource is investing $12 million in electric system upgrades across the northside of Waterbury. The enhancement project will happen in phases through 2025. This year, the work includes installing nearly 150 stronger, thicker utility poles, stringing more than three miles of overhead electric lines including “tree wire” which can better withstand extreme weather and adding seven reclosers – high-voltage circuit breakers that detect and limit power interruptions. The upgrades and reconfiguration of electric circuits will allow Eversource to retire and eventually remove a 65-year-old substation that will no longer be needed.

“This project will create several ‘automatic zones’- areas with equipment that can quickly reroute power if there is a problem - which will enhance electric reliability so customers have dependable service,” said Eversource President of Connecticut Electric Operations Steve Sullivan. “By continuing to make strategic investments in the system, like these in Waterbury, we’re building a more robust and resilient electric grid that will serve our customers well into the future.”
Crew working in Waterbury
The project is underway with crews working Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. – weather permitting. Roads currently affected include Bishop, Bronson, Burton, Cooke, Pearl, Ridgewood, Waterville and Wyman streets. Eversource continues to work closely with community leaders and customers where the project is being done to minimize potential impacts to traffic and coordinate with other roadwork happening in the city. Customers may experience short power interruptions at times during the course of the project so crews can safely perform the work. Any customers affected will be notified in advance by the energy company. The 2023 portion of this project is expected to be finished by the end of August.
