Skiff Mountain
Skiff Mountain Wildlife Management Area is an 800-acre property containing a mix of wooded areas and fields that are annually mowed.
Peck’s Pond, a 27-acre water body, is a feature of the property. Skiff Mountain is a popular destination for seasonal hunting and fishing.
Walking, canoeing/kayaking, and wildlife photography are also possible on the property. RRR has a cooperative agreement with the Connecticut DEEP Wildlife Division to manage Skiff Mountain as a Wildlife Management Area.
Skiff Mountain provides valuable habitat to many species that depend on open fields. As many parts of Connecticut have converted from agriculture to other uses, large areas of maintained grasslands have become rare, and species such as bluebirds have lost large amounts of habitat.
Skiff Mountain’s combination of forests and fields contribute to a contiguous 7,000-acre regional area protected through the efforts of land trusts, state and local governments, and private landowners.
The Connecticut DEEP Wildlife Division conducts seasonal mowing of the property’s fields to maintain a grassland/meadow habitat. Without this work, the fields would quickly begin turning into forest.
The forests of Skiff Mountain have been actively managed for the past 30 years. Timber harvests have been designed to create openings for wildlife and promote healthy forest conditions.
Forest management work is done through a collaborative effort of Eversource’s land managers, its professional foresters, and DEEP’s Wildlife staff.
