Newgate
The Newgate property includes 188 acres of mixed-aged forests on either side of early successional habitat under the property’s power lines.
This property is managed for wildlife habitat through an agreement between Eversource and the Connecticut DEEP Wildlife Division. The DEEP also owns an adjacent property that is managed for wildlife. A key feature of the Newgate property is its location along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, a heavily-used, multi-modal linear recreational facility.
This property provides important visual buffering and areas of interest along a portion of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail.
The Newgate Wildlife Management Area borders Eversource’s property to the Eversource. East Granby Farms (Town of East Granby) and McLean Game Refuge are also nearby. Together, these properties create a large protected open space area with extensive recreational opportunities.
Both Eversource and CT DEEP manage forestland to promote forest health and wildlife habitat. Timber harvests have occurred on these properties in the past 10 years.
