In recognition of National Safe Digging Day as 8/11 approaches on the calendar, Eversource is reminding customers to always call 8-1-1 before starting any project that requires digging, whether it’s as basic as planting a shrub or tree, or as complex as installing a deck or pool. Statistics show excavation work causes damage to underground utility lines every six minutes in the U.S., and a simple call to 8-1-1 in advance of digging to mark those underground lines can not only avoid electric or natural gas service interruptions, but also possible injury or even death. According to the US Department of Transportation, if someone calls 8-1-1 before they dig, they have a 99 percent chance of avoiding an outage or a catastrophe.

Amidst increasing volatility in the region’s wholesale energy supply markets, Eversource this week filed its new Default Service supply rate, which will increase starting on August 1 if approved by the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission (PUC). As the ocean waters churn along the east coast and another hurricane season begins, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting above-normal activity for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Between June 1 and November 30, NOAA is forecasting a 60% chance of an above-normal season with 6-10 hurricanes having winds of 74 mph or higher and 3-5 major hurricanes with winds 111 mph or higher. With the changing climate increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather around the globe, including here in New England, Eversource is reminding customers to plan and always be prepared for severe weather. The energy company works year-round to safeguard the electric grid through upgrades, maintenance, and proactive vegetation management to ensure reliability for customers.

While high electricity usage during a heat wave can put a strain on the electric system, the energy company is prepared to meet the increased demand and its crews are ready to respond to any outages or issues that may arise. National Engineers Week grid modernization reliability

With the frequency, unpredictability and severity of extreme weather including thunderstorms increasing, our team is working every day to fortify our electric system to withstand the worst of climate change. In addition to impacts like drought-stressed trees falling onto our power lines and intense heat waves straining the grid, our substations have been affected by an increase in the occurrence of lightning incidents that were previously a “worst-case” scenario with a 100-year probability. After lightning strikes caused surges that damaged equipment in substations in Western Massachusetts and South Boston within a three-year period, we assembled a team of engineers, supported by substation operating mechanics who respond to damage during storms, to assess the equipment and control systems at all the approximately 600 substations across our service territory in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
