Cleaning, Hygiene and Facility Water Use Savings Tips

Help your employees stay healthy by making sure your sinks, toilets and dishwashers are operating properly. By taking a few simple steps, you may find some quick ways to lower your energy costs.

  • Avoid any unnecessary water use. Consider installing sink faucet aerators or other water-efficient fixtures and controls that turn off the water flow automatically. If it's time to replace sinks, toilets or clothes washing machine, consider high-efficiency models. They use at least 20 percent less water than their standard counterparts.
  • Run your dishwasher without running up your bill. Make sure to operate your dishwasher at full capacity and turn it off when it’s not in use. With dishwashers being the biggest consumer of energy in commercial kitchens, taking energy efficiency measures related to your dishwasher can have a big impact on your energy bill.
  • Repair leaking faucets and toilets. A dripping hot water faucet can waste hundreds of gallons annually, so be sure to fix any leaking sinks, toilets and other equipment as soon as possible. In most facilities, electricity or gas is used to heat water, so wasted water results in higher bills across the board.
  • Consider an efficient water heater. If it comes time to replace your water heater, think about installing an ENERGY STAR® certified commercial hot water heater, which could save you up to 15% on your water heating costs. Heat pump water heaters also provide a reliable source of hot water with lower energy costs. This type of water heater is great energy saver as it is 2-8 times more efficient than electric resistance water heater and 14 times more efficient than gas-fired water heaters.
