Bath and Laundry Energy Savings

You can keep your water and energy usage down without compromising your personal hygiene or safety.

Personal Hygiene and Grooming

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth. Turning off the tap while brushing can save up to 200 gallons of water a month.
  • Skip the tub and take a shower. It takes 35 to 50 gallons of water to fill a bathtub versus 25 gallons used during a 10-minute shower.
  • If you need to replace your fixtures, choose energy-efficient models. Showers account for nearly 17 percent of residential indoor water use. Using energy-efficient fixtures can save several gallons of water per shower.
  • Skip the hairdryer. Take advantage of the extra time at home by letting your hair air dry instead.

Washing Laundry

  • Avoid using too much detergent. Follow detergent instructions carefully. Overusing reduces effective washing action and may require more energy in the form of extra rinse cycles.
  • If you need to replace your washer, choose an energy-efficient model. Energy-efficient models with front-load or horizontal axis features use less electricity and water than other models.

Drying Laundry

  • Dry two or more loads in a row. Drying multiple loads of laundry in a row allows you to take advantage of extra heat in the dryer and uses less energy.
  • Clean your dryer's lint filter before every load. Your dryer will operate more efficiently after you clean the lint filter. In addition, clean the dryer vent periodically for better air flow.
  • Use a clothesline. Drying your laundry outside saves energy by not running your dryer, and avoids heating up your house.
