Kitchen Energy Savings Tips

Some of the best memories are made in the kitchen. Here are a few tips to keep your energy costs down while cooking more meals at home.

Refrigerator and Freezer

  • Let food cool before putting it in the fridge or freezer. Putting hot food straight into the fridge or freezer raises the temperature inside. It then has to work work extra hard and draw more energy to cool it down. To save energy let hot food cool on the side before it goes in.
  • Don’t overload your refrigerator. If your fridge is overloaded, cool air won't effectively circulate around each container. This causes your fridge to work harder to maintain the proper temperature.

Dishwashing

  • Using a dishwasher is cheaper and easier than hand washing. You could save about $1,300 worth of energy and nearly 230 hours per year of personal time by using a dishwasher instead of hand washing.
  • Use the right setting. Check to see if your dishwasher has an eco mode or setting to help save energy and water with each wash.
  • Air dry dishes. Turn off the heated dry setting on your dishwasher, and allow your dishes to air dry instead.

Cooking

  • Consider alternative cooking methods. Ovens use far more energy than other cooking methods. For smaller amounts of food, use your microwave or toaster oven. For larger meals, consider using a programmable pressure cooker or an outdoor grill. Pressure cookers can reduce cooking time by about 70%, saving even more energy.
  • Keep lids on pots while cooking. This will generate more heat in the pot and cook your food faster.

Consider High-Efficiency Appliances

Did you know:

  • Leading high-efficiency refrigerator models use 7-13% less energy.
  • Leading high-efficiency dishwashers use 25% less energy than conventional models.
