Connecticut Residential Solar Incentives

Offset the cost of your electric bill with energy you generate with solar

Residential Renewable Energy Solutions (RRES)

Through RRES you can sell the power you generate with your residential solar installation and any renewable energy certificates (RECs) to us.

This approach allows for on-bill credits to be received from electricity generated, and lets you pull electricity from the grid if you need more than your solar installation is generating. We also offer two different incentive options.

Qualifying for RRES

Start by contacting a licensed solar installer in Connecticut. They'll work with you to design your system and apply for RRES. We recommend getting quotes from multiple installers before entering into a contract.

Incentive Options

You'll be able to select from two incentive compensation options: Buy-all and Netting.

Buy-All Incentive

Export all the power that your system produces to the electric grid without first supplying your home.

If you choose this option:

  1. We will purchase power from you at a rate approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).
  2. You'll receive compensation as either an on-bill credit to offset your monthly bill or a cash payment once per quarter. The cash payment must be to a payee that is not the customer of record. You may specify a percentage of your compensation to be split between the two options.
  3. You will purchase the electricity you need to power your home directly from Eversource.
  4. Any on-bill credits not used to offset your bill can be cashed out once annually to the customer of record.

Current incentive rate

The Buy-All rate for approved applications submitting in 2025 is $0.3195 per kWh, and the Buy-All rate for approved applications submitting in 2026 is $0.3289 per kWh. This rate includes the REC value. Once enrolled, your incentive rate is locked in for a 20-year term.

Meter setup

With the Buy-All Incentive, your power generation and consumption are measured using separate meters installed at your home.

Netting Incentive

Supply your home with power first, and export excess power to the grid.

If you choose this option:

  • Power produced by your system but not consumed onsite is exported to the grid. At the end of the billing cycle, you are either billed or credited for the net usage/production. On-bill credits for excess production are created at the same rate you pay for electricity.
  • On-bill credits are applied to your bill and will be used to offset future supply and delivery charges.
  • Excess credits can be rolled over each month. Credits are only cashed out if you stop electric service.

Current incentive rate

The netting incentive rate is equal to the current retail rate plus any quarterly Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) payment you qualify for. Currently the REC payment rate for approved projects submitting in 2026 is $0, however you may still qualify for additional income-based incentives.

Solar Energy Adjustment

Netting projects that apply in 2026 will be subject to a $0.0402/kWh on-bill charge for total solar production. This charge will be listed as a line item on your bill as “Solar Energy Adjustment” and is used to offset program costs. Customers should ensure this is considered in savings estimates from installers.

Meter setup

You’ll receive a new meter that measures how much energy you consume and how much is exported to the grid. You’ll also receive a second meter to measure the energy produced by your solar installation.

Additional Income-Based Incentives

You may be eligible for an additional incentive if your income is at or below 60% of the state median income or if your solar installation is in an economically-distressed community. Your can only receive one additional incentive.

Additional Buy-all IncentivesRate for Applications Submitted in 2026
At or below 60% state median income$0.055/kWh
In an economically-distressed community$0.0275/kWh
Additional Netting IncentivesRate for Applications Submitted in 2026
At or below 60% state median income$0.035/kWh
In an economically-distressed community$0.0175/kWh

Participation in our Winter Protection Program, Matching Payment Program, Electric Discount Rate, or the Home Energy Solutions Income Eligible (HES-IE) program indicates a customer is eligible for the additional income-based incentive.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Renewable Energy Solutions, you must:

  • Be a current or future Eversource customer
  • Live in a 1-4 family property
  • Sign up for a Home Energy Solutions assessment, unless your home was built in 1980 or later
  • Be installing a system sized less than or equal to 25kW that is also sized to your home's historical load

You may request additional allowances for the standard expected kWh of electric vehicles and some heat pumps:

  • Electric vehicles: 3,285 kWh
  • Whole-home air source heat pump: 3,608 kWh
  • Whole-home ground source heat pump: 2,458 kWh

If you already have solar and are installing additional generation at your home, the new system will be separately metered.

Solar PV projects can also interconnect under Rate 980 as an alternative to RRES. However, Rate 980 is not billed like the previous Net Metering Program and is not typically preferred by residential customers. For more information, see our Rate 980 FAQ.
