Why Are We Doing This Project?
We are proposing replacement of an existing underground 115-kilovolt (kV) high-pressure fluid filled (HPFF) electric transmission line with a new 115-kv HPFF line, using a like-for-like repair and replacement process called reconductoring. The existing line was installed in 1968 and is nearing the end of its designed life expectancy. The pipe housing the transmission line has deteriorated and is known to need repair.
The reconductoring approach provides repairs for the deteriorated pipes without the need for full in-street construction along the entire project route. Transmission line replacement will require road work including reconductoring and pipe repairs, where necessary.
The proposed transmission system improvements proactively increase system reliability by:
- Modernizing cable infrastructure by replacing the existing HPFF line.
- Reducing occurrence of unplanned outages which may require the need for emergency replacement or repair.
The proposed project is part of our larger Underground Cable Modernization Program (UCMP) that we are conducting throughout our service territory in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Where Is This Work Being Done?

The proposed replacement line would follow the same route as the existing line, beginning in South Woburn and passing through Winchester, Medford, Somerville and Boston.
Minor upgrades to the Eversource Mystic Substation and South Woburn Substation will be required to accommodate the new cables.
Replacement work will not interrupt normal electric service to local customers.
