Line 112 and Crystal Spring Substation

Why Are We Doing This Project?

We determined after an extensive study, that integration of additional clean energy into the electrical grid in the Marion-Fairhaven area requires an approximately three-mile extension of Line 112, an existing 115 kV overhead transmission line between Mendall Road in Acushnet and the Crystal Spring substation in Mattapoisett.

This work is part of a larger initiative focused on electric system enhancements to maintain reliability and enable distributed energy resource (DER) facilities to safely interconnect and operate.

Where Is This Work Being Done?

The new line extension will occur from Acushnet to Mattapoisett.

  • An existing 115-kilovolt (kV) line that currently passes by Mendall Road in Acushnet will be tapped and extended by 3 miles in the existing right-of-way to the Crystal Spring Substation in Mattapoisett. This extension will cross Mendall Road in Acushnet, Long Path Road, Tinkham Lane, Riverbend Lane and Crystal Spring Road in Mattapoisett.

Upgrades to our Crystal Spring substation at 26R Crystal Spring Road in Mattapoisett will include:

  • Existing transformer will be replaced and a second transformer will be added; new metal clad switchgear, upgraded ancillary equipment and two new capacitor banks will be installed.
  • Five new transmission poles will be installed adjacent to the station.
  • Fence perimeter will be expanded to accommodate upgraded equipment.

When Is The Work Being Done?

  • Proposed start of construction: Q4 2024
  • Estimated in-service date: Q4 2026

*Subject to change, pending necessary approvals
