Marion-Fairhaven Area DER Projects

The Marion-Fairhaven area (Marion, Fairhaven, Acushnet, Mattapoisett and Rochester) is chosen as one of six regions in Massachusetts that need electric system enhancements to maintain reliability and enable distributed energy resource (DER) facilities to safely interconnect and operate.

The upgrades needed in this area include:

  • Line 112, an existing 115-kilovolt (kV) line in Acushnet, will be tapped and extended by 3 miles to the Crystal Spring substation in Mattapoisett.
  • Crystal Spring and Rochester substations will include an expansion with upgrades.
  • Arsene Street and Wing Lane substations will receive upgrades.

If all six groups of projects are approved, that would enable the integration of approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar energy needed to help Massachusetts achieve its net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050.
