Powering the Olympic Broadcasts for NBC
As the world’s greatest athletes are gathered together for the Olympic Games in Paris, the networks of NBC Sports are bringing the action back to America.
Most of the broadcasts on NBC, their family of cable networks and their streaming service Peacock, will be produced, coordinated and broadcast from NBC’s state-of-the-art studio and production facilities in Stamford, Connecticut.
NBC has come to rely on Eversource for our reliable service and our expertise in energy efficiency.
NBC Sports consolidated many of their production and broadcast facilities to Stamford into a former shampoo facility in 2012. As the sports landscape changed and new sports-related businesses grew, so did their need for consistent electric and natural gas service.
Today the facility covers more than 400,000 square feet and NBC Sports estimated that up to 1,800 employees are working in Stamford during the Olympic Games. College football and Premier League soccer are also produced in Stamford.
Since 2019, we have invested millions of dollars in upgrades to our distribution system in the area, including Glenbrook substation in Stamford, along with transmission network upgrades that benefit hundreds of industrial, commercial and residential customers in southwest Connecticut.
Working with energy efficiency, NBC has initiated several projects to reduce the amount of power they consume in their Stamford facility, where 95% of the lighting is LED lighting.
With our help, a cooling containment system was installed along with 24 spots for charging electric vehicles and 36 more spots planned.
“By delivering stable and reliable energy to NBC Sports, Eversource is helping to power the biggest sporting events in the world,” said Penni Conner, Executive Vice President, Customer Experience and Energy Strategy. “This includes both the Summer and Winter Olympics, the Ryder Cup, men’s and women’s golf tournaments (U.S. Open and British Open) along with major college football games.”
