With temperatures expected to be in the 90s along with high humidity over the next several days across the region, air conditioners and fans will be working overtime at many homes and businesses. During the summer months, Eversource customers in New Hampshire use about 25% more electricity to keep cool when the mercury soars. While high electricity usage during a heat wave can put a strain on the electric system, the energy company is prepared to meet the increased demand and its crews are ready to respond to any outages or issues that may arise. Remote system operators are also constantly monitoring the system and are ready to reroute power and shift other resources as necessary.

National Engineers Week grid modernization reliability

With the frequency, unpredictability and severity of extreme weather including thunderstorms increasing, our team is working every day to fortify our electric system to withstand the worst of climate change. In addition to impacts like drought-stressed trees falling onto our power lines and intense heat waves straining the grid, our substations have been affected by an increase in the occurrence of lightning incidents that were previously a “worst-case” scenario with a 100-year probability. After lightning strikes caused surges that damaged equipment in substations in Western Massachusetts and South Boston within a three-year period, we assembled a team of engineers, supported by substation operating mechanics who respond to damage during storms, to assess the equipment and control systems at all the approximately 600 substations across our service territory in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

As the price of energy continues to trend downward amidst persistent volatility in energy supply markets, Eversource has filed significantly reduced electric supply rates with the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission (PUC) that would be in effect from February 1, 2024, until July 31, 2024. The new electric supply prices from power generators that the energy company filed today with the PUC would be 59% lower for residential customers compared to last February 1 and 34% lower than the current supply, or Default Service, rate.

Following this week’s powerful nor’easter—the 10 th major storm of the season—which caused widespread outages and damage to the electric system, Eversource deployed more than 2,200 line, tree, and service crews across the state to work around-the-clock to restore power to its customers. Despite historic snowfall in parts of the state, damaging wind gusts, and extremely difficult travel conditions, the energy company has restored power to more than 99% of its customers using innovated tools to meet that milestone ahead of schedule. Since the start of the nor’easter on Monday night, Eversource has restored power to more than 243,000 customers by lineworker repairs and remote switching by system operators, and will continue to work until every customer in New Hampshire has their power restored.
