As part of its continued investment in scaling the emerging technologies needed to tackle the most urgent climate challenges and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, the Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) has selected Eversource to receive up to $19.5 million in federal cost share to build upon the success of its award-winning 24.9 MW Outer Cape Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Advanced in partnership with Cape Light Compact (CLC) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Eversource’s Outer Cape Microgrid Optimization Project will coordinate and optimize diverse, customer-owned clean energy resources like solar panels, smart thermostats, and batteries with its Outer Cape BESS in Provincetown to extend the length of time the BESS can provide customers with reliable power while crews work to make repairs.

As part of its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, Eversource employees across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire will join their neighbors for the 28th annual Source to Sea Cleanup. For the past eight years, the energy company has partnered with the Connecticut River Conservancy as a lead sponsor of the initiative, where volunteers target trash-ridden sites along the 410-mile watershed region and remove as much waste as they can. This year, Eversource employees in Massachusetts will be volunteering in Springfield for a cleanup event at Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club.

Following the recent Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB) decision approving the Greater Cambridge Energy Program (GCEP), Eversource and its local partners BXP and the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority are coordinating on planning efforts to begin construction of the first-of-its-kind transmission initiative. Innovatively designed to place a significant amount of needed infrastructure underground and out of sight, GCEP will address the increased electric demand in the region, enhance the resiliency of the transmission system and ensure a flexible grid to reliably serve customers while supporting the decarbonization and electrification goals of both the City of Cambridge and Massachusetts to lessen the impact of climate change.

During the summer months, Eversource customers in Massachusetts use about 40% more electricity to keep cool when the mercury soars. Following a Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) order last year aimed at minimizing volatility, periods for the supply portion of the bill have a new schedule that runs August through January and February through July instead of July through December and January through June.

Over the course of two heating and cooling seasons, this innovative, community-focused, and eco-friendly pilot project will evaluate whether utility-scale geothermal networks can feasibly and affordably heat and cool homes and businesses in densely populated and mixed-use areas of New England. With the networked geothermal system now up and running, customer conversions will continue through the summer with the official pilot start date for data collection beginning in July.

Atlantic Hurricane Season storm preparedness safety reliability

With the start of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting an above-normal hurricane season, Eversource is reminding customers about the importance of preparing and planning for severe weather. The NOAA is forecasting up to 25 named storms this season – of those, up to 13 could become hurricanes with winds 74 mph or higher. The changing climate is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather around the globe, including here in New England. Eversource works year-round to strengthen the electric grid through upgrades, maintenance, and proactive vegetation management to enhance reliability for customers.

Cape Cod Solution transmission offshore wind clean energy reliability

As Cape Cod communities lead the way in facilitating the delivery of clean energy to homes and businesses across New England by supporting the infrastructure needed to connect offshore wind projects to the grid, Eversource is pleased to announce the completion of Phase I of the Cape Cod Solution. Currently one of only two transmission projects underway in New England that will allow for the interconnection of offshore wind, the Cape Cod Solution will enhance reliability for customers, make the system more resilient to storms and other extreme weather, and help meet the commonwealth’s and region’s decarbonization goals while supporting the electrification of the transportation and heating sectors. This co-optimized, multi-phase transmission program involved several components, including the expansion of Eversource’s West Barnstable substation and the installation of an approximately 12.5-mile transmission line. These lines are built with future electric and clean energy interconnection needs in mind, initially operating at 115 kV to immediately enhance service reliability for customers with the capability to increase capacity to 345 kV for the interconnection of clean energy from offshore wind farms as they come online. This initiative improves electric reliability efficiently and cost-effectively on Cape Cod and makes the transmission system more resilient to increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change.

National Engineers Week grid modernization reliability

With the frequency, unpredictability and severity of extreme weather including thunderstorms increasing, our team is working every day to fortify our electric system to withstand the worst of climate change. In addition to impacts like drought-stressed trees falling onto our power lines and intense heat waves straining the grid, our substations have been affected by an increase in the occurrence of lightning incidents that were previously a “worst-case” scenario with a 100-year probability. After lightning strikes caused surges that damaged equipment in substations in Western Massachusetts and South Boston within a three-year period, we assembled a team of engineers, supported by substation operating mechanics who respond to damage during storms, to assess the equipment and control systems at all the approximately 600 substations across our service territory in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Storm storm restoration

Following this week’s violent storm that caused widespread damage across the region, hundreds of Eversource line crews and system operators have been working nonstop and restored power to approximately 225,000 customers since Sunday. The energy company has restored power to more than 99 percent of its customers in Massachusetts and expects to complete substantial restoration this evening. A list of town-by-town estimated times of restoration (ETRs) can be found on Eversource.com. Eversource crews will continue working to restore any remaining scattered outages this evening and will begin a demobilization plan that will enable extra crews to support ongoing storm restoration efforts in Maine.

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, the energy company has restored power to more than 195,000 customers in Massachusetts and continues working to restore about 27,000 customers who lost power during the storm. Eversource expects to complete restoration for most customers by 11 p.m. on Wednesday, with many customers being restored before then.
