Crews repair damage, remote system operators use smart switch technology to restore power to approximately 9,000 customers statewide today

BOSTON, Mass. (August 22, 2021) – Thousands of Eversource line, tree and service workers focused on restoring power to customers after Tropical Storm Henri’s arrival in Massachusetts brought tropical downpours and strong wind gusts upwards of 60 miles per hour to areas of the commonwealth today. As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, Eversource crews have restored power to approximately 9,000 customers in Massachusetts and will continue working to get power back on for the approximately 1,110 customers statewide without power. Additional isolated outages remain possible as the storm and its remnants linger in New England through Monday.

“Areas of Massachusetts have experienced tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain today, bringing down trees onto power lines and causing damage to the electric system,” said Eversource Vice President of Electric Operations Doug Foley. “As with all storms, we prepared for a worst-case scenario and as forecast models changed, we made adjustments and will adjust as necessary moving forward. Our crews will continue working hard to restore power as quickly and safely as possible, until all of our customers have power.”

Additional contract crews brought in to support the restoration effort in Massachusetts will be redeployed to support Eversource’s restoration efforts in Connecticut where assistance is needed.

Supported by crews from as far away as Canada and states including Illinois and Tennessee, thousands of line, tree and service workers, troubleshooters, damage assessors and other critical roles have been assessing damage, making repairs, and restoring power to customers throughout the day. At the same time, remote system operators are using technology like smart switches to isolate outages and remotely reroute power for customers.

Eversource is asking customers to report outages online, or by calling 800-592-2000 in Eastern Massachusetts and 877-659-6326 in Western Massachusetts, and reminding them to stay clear of all downed wires and report them immediately to 911.

The energy company is also reminding its gas customers that flooding could damage natural gas heating systems and appliances. If you smell gas: leave immediately, call 911 from a safe place, and call 800–592–2000 in Eastern Massachusetts or 800-525-8222 for former Columbia Gas customers.

Additionally, customers using a generator should be sure the generator is located well away from their home or business and that the transfer switch is working properly. Anyone beginning storm clean-up is advised to be extra careful and to check for any wires that may be tangled in storm debris.
