Work scheduled across community will help reduce power outages

BERLIN, Conn. – As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce tree-related power outages, Eversource is trimming and removing trees that threaten electric reliability in communities around the state. In Glastonbury, the energy company is pruning trees near electric lines along some 54 miles of town roads, as well as removing tall-growing and incompatible species while expanding cleared areas along transmission rights of way in the community.

“A consistent tree trimming program helps to improve day-to-day reliability during all types of weather. As a result, we continue to see fewer power outages where this work has been done,” said Eversource Manager of Vegetation Management in Connecticut Sean Redding. “While we all love our trees, they can have a devastating effect on the electric system, especially during a storm, that’s why this work is so vital.”

Tree work along town roads is underway and is expected to be complete by the end of April. Work is taking place on New London Turnpike from Quarry Road to Oak Street; Hebron Avenue from Manchester Road to Pembroke Terrace as well as on Addison, Chalker Hill, Chestnut Hill, Church Hill, Cider Mill, Coop, Crescent, Diamond Lake, Goodrich, Granite, Hale, Karen Lee, Kinne, Neipsic, Old Coop, Russet, Slater, Three Mile and Woodhaven roads; Bailey, Commerce, Main, Oak, Strickland and Weir streets. Also, on Applewood, Benton, Cortland, Cricket, Nutmeg, Owens and Shady Hill lanes; Briarwood, Brookhaven, Cedar Ridge, Lincoln, Oakwood, Pippin and Sequinn drives; Cedar Ridge Terrace, Naubuc Avenue and Julius Way. Asplundh Tree Expert representatives working on behalf of Eversource are going door to door to distribute information and collect permission slips for the roadside work to be done. In addition, crews from Distinctive Tree Care are completing work along Goodale Hill Road, Ash Swamp Road and Keeney, Thompson and Weir streets.

Previously announced tree work on rights of way in Glastonbury is continuing and should be finished by early February. That work is being done in the area of New London Turnpike, State Route 2, Hebron and Uconn avenues; Feldspar Ridge; Hollis Landing; Woodland and Bell streets; Accornero, Johnny Cake, Juniper and Margaret lanes; Juniper Lane West; Acorn Ridge, Chestnut Hill, Clark Hill, Coldbrook, Country Club, Kinne, Millstone, Neipsic and Three Mile roads as well as Belle Woods, Candlelight, East Opal and Hawthorne Mead drives.

All contractors carry proper identification and will never seek to enter a private residence. As a reminder, there is no cost to the property owner for any of this work.

Eversource has been closely coordinating with Glastonbury Tree Warden Gregory A. Foran (860-652-7686; gregory.foran@glastonbury-ct.gov).
