Mystic to Golden Hills Reliability Improvement Project

As part of our everyday effort to deliver reliable energy, we are upgrading two, 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines with newer cable technology, in the communities of Everett, Malden, Melrose and Saugus, Mass.

A strong electrical transmission grid is vital to the safety, security and economic prosperity of the region. The transmission system serves a critical role to ensure that electricity flows with a high degree of reliability from wherever the power is generated to where power is needed.

The Mystic to Golden Hills Reliability Improvement Project spans 6.1 miles from the Mystic Substation in Everett, through Malden and Melrose, to National Grid's Golden Hills Substation in Saugus. Work includes replacing two, aging, underground cables with newer-technology cable.

At Eversource, we're always working to serve you better. Reusing the existing duct bank (a group of tubes to house electric lines) allows crews to reduce the amount of surface excavation needed while replacing the newer cable in pipes that are already buried underground, minimizing traffic disruptions.

Project Facts:

  • Route length: Approximately 6.1 miles
  • Cities: Everett, Malden, Melrose and Saugus, Mass.
  • Line voltage: 345,000 volts (345-kV)
  • Start of construction on transmission lines: Fourth quarter 2019

Estimated Timetable:

  • Start of Construction, Line X: November 2019
  • Start of Construction, Line Y: October 2020
  • Projected in-service date: Third quarter 2021

Community Outreach

Before starting construction in a community, notifications will be mailed to all property owners within 300 feet of the project route. A Field Outreach Specialist will conduct door-to-door notifications to nearby property owners, residents and local businesses informing them of upcoming activity.

This project website will be updated weekly reflecting locations where crews will be working and the construction activities taking place.

Construction Updates

First, please know that Eversource takes every safety precaution while working in local communities, and that all people working on the construction project carry identification. The project work will not interrupt electric service to homes or businesses.

Eversource is committed to updating neighbors, businesses, and all community members about project activities, especially during construction. Please keep in mind that the construction schedule may change due to weather or other unexpected circumstances.

Traffic Management Plans

Working in consultation with town and state officials, including the Mass. Department of Transportation, Eversource will develop a set of Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for each section of the Mystic to Golden Hills Reliability Improvement Project.

The TMPs will illustrate detailed site plans, showing underground line locations, hours of construction, area-specific traffic controls and more.
