Offshore Wind

We believe that offshore wind represents the most significant opportunity to decarbonize the electric generation footprint of New England.

We have been working to develop offshore wind in the Northeast in partnership with Ørsted, the world’s leading developer of offshore wind.

In 2022 we underwent a strategic business review of our offshore wind assets, which ultimately resulted in a decision to divest from this area of our business.

Nevertheless, we remain supportive of the region’s offshore wind development through contracting for power on behalf of our customers and developing innovative transmission solutions to bring offshore wind and other clean energy resources to our customers.

We are proud of the significant progress we’ve made in partnership with Ørsted to deliver clean, renewable offshore wind energy to the Northeast.

In September 2023 we closed on the sale of our 50% interest in approximately 175,000 of developable uncommitted offshore acres to Ørsted.

In January 2024, we reached an agreement to sell them our 50 percent interest in the 924-megawatt Sunrise Wind project, contingent on the successful award of the NY04 NYSERDA Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Credits Agreement request for proposal and other conditions.

On February 13, 2024, we announced that we executed a definitive agreement to sell our 50% ownership share in South Fork Wind and Revolution Wind to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). We expect to enter into a separate construction management agreement as a contractor to Revolution Wind to complete the onshore work that is currently underway.

Going forward, we plan to remain an integral player in this historic shift to a clean energy generation mix by focusing on our strengths as a regulated transmission builder and operator and bringing the benefits of these investments to our customers.

Our Progress

South Fork Wind

Located off the coast of New York, this project broke ground in early 2022. We successfully led the completion of the onshore construction scope of the project in the spring of 2023.

At the end of 2023, South Fork Wind started delivering power to the local grid in East Hampton, marking the first commercial scale offshore wind farm in the United States to begin spinning.

Once complete, the 130MW of clean energy will power approximately 70,000 homes.

Sunrise Wind

This project has achieved important state and federal permitting milestones throughout the past year, and when complete will deliver 924 MW of offshore wind energy to power nearly 600,000 New York homes.

Revolution Wind

This project has received all necessary local, state and federal permits to begin full construction.

The project broke ground onshore last year with Eversource leading this scope of work. Offshore work will begin in 2024, the project is expected to be completed in 2025.

Once complete, Revolution Wind will power more than 350,000 homes in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Together, this portfolio will provide enough energy to power more than 1,000,000 American homes.

New London, Connecticut State Pier

A depiction of the State Pier project in New London, Connecticut

Along with our partner Ørsted, we have helped transform State Pier in New London into a state-of-the-art, heavy-lift marine terminal able to serve Connecticut with a broad range of industries, cargo types, and vessels benefiting the state and local economy for decades yet to come.

State Pier played a vital role in helping us deliver South Fork Wind, the first commercial scale offshore wind farm in the United States.

Skilled union laborers worked around the clock to stage and assembly the 12 turbines for the project.

Additionally, work at State Pier will begin soon for the Revolution Wind project. Vessel activity will significantly increase at State Pier and generate high-skilled, long-term employment in New London: 80-120 well-paying offshore wind-related positions are anticipated to be created at the site.

Protecting marine wildlife and habitat

Eversource and Ørsted are partnered with the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut to study the relationship between offshore wind and marine wildlife. This study will allow aquarium scientists to investigate the presence and long-term phycological response of sea turtles and marine mammals before and after the construction of the three offshore wind farms.

We've also entered into an agreement with the National Wildlife Federation, Natural Recourses Defense Counsel and the Conservation Law Foundation to further enhance protections for North Atlantic right whales.

This partnership demonstrates Eversource's commitment to developing offshore wind in the most thoughtful way possible, and to mitigate potential impacts to marine wildlife and habitat.
