Martha’s Vineyard Battery Energy Storage Project
May 26, 2021-
Eversource has recently completed a feasibility analysis for the Martha’s Vineyard Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, including detailed engineering and site evaluation, load analysis, along with a detailed cost schedule. Based on this feasibility analysis, the Company has decided to cancel the project due to new information regarding an increased future load forecast for Martha’s Vineyard as well as increased project costs.
The increased load forecast indicates the need for the construction of a 5th submarine cable to the island, and the construction will eliminate the usefulness of the Martha’s Vineyard BESS. In addition, the new cable will allow for the retirement of the existing diesel generators without the need for the BESS. These reasons have caused the Company to make the difficult decision to discontinue the Martha’s Vineyard BESS project.
More detailed information about the Project cancellation can be found here.
The cable project is currently in development, and more details about that project will be shared as the information becomes available.
Eversource would like to thank the Towns of Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, and Edgartown as well as the Martha’s Vineyard Commission for working collaboratively with the project team.
